When not assuming the identities of others, Vaer appears to have a somewhat subdued personality. As a consequence of their upbringing and training as someone who was meant to simply assume other's identities, they have a warped sense of self, and readily changes their personality to fit any given situation even if they're not physically altering their appearance.
With their newfound freedom, however, Vaer becomes an incredibly curious person as they navigate a journey of self-discovery. This often presents itself in the form of being inquisitive, at times to the point of being blunt and prying, especially when learning about the minutiae and everyday lives of everyday people, and at others being flattering and flirtatious. Just, you know, to feel something.
Because of their history, Vaer is also quite accustomed to a life in the upper echelons of society, and likes to adorn themselves in fine fashions and jewelry, and may be a bit vain at times. Luckily, they can change at will. This often plays at odds with their newfound curiosity around the world, and they may often come across as incredibly arrogant as a result. What do you mean there isn't anyone to taste their food to check for poison?
As a changeling, Vaer can take on a myriad of forms; some of these forms are casual "masks," taken on in the spur of a moment, while others are riddled with an entire persona. Of these personas, the one Vaer adopted when they assumed Tala's identiy is the most prominent, as well as that of "Vaer," the persona they have since defaulted to, which is close to their true appearance as a changeling, but to most they would simply seem like a rather tall, androgynous half-elven sort of person with alabaster skin and hair that seems almost prismatic, silver eyes, and a lithe frame.To see a changeling's truest form is rare; when Vaer reveals this aspect of them, they appear almost as though they were a living, breathing, marble statue - with faded features devoid of any minute details.
Vaer can change their appearance and voice at will, as little or as completely as they want to the form of another humanoid. When pretending to be others, Vaer is almost nearly indistinguishable.

Vaer was an orphaned Changeling in the capital of Atra; young enough that one of their only memories was of their given Changeling name, and brief recollections of people with alabaster skin, white eyes, and silver hair like theirs, seas of sand, and shining armor. Soon after they were orphaned, they were discovered by the Atrean Royal Guard and taken in by the headmaster of the Atrean Royal College of Bardic Arts. The headmaster recognized that their shapechanging nature could be invaluable to their trade. They underwent the curriculum typical of one training to become a bard for the high society of Atra - but at night, they were taken to the royal palace where they were made to learn everything that they could to make them a suitable body double. Soon, Vaer would come to live a life where they never truly had an identity to themselves; rather, they were a collection of others' identities impressed onto them.
Then they met Tala. Tala was the shining gem of the College; not a single soul in the College nor outside of it ever had anything bad to say about Tala. She was universally loved by all for her art, her performances, and her welcoming demeanor. She took Vaer in under her wing, becoming a close confidant, and was one of the only people who ever saw Vaer as someone who was their own person, and not a replacement for others. Vaer treasured Tala more and more over their years together in the College, almost to the point of idolizing and becoming overprotective of her.
As Tala grew in prominence, however, so too did her involvement in the intricate affairs and exploits of the nobility. These nobles grew similarly possessive of Tala's attention and time, and some became increasingly suspicious. While most only knew Tala for her uplifting, whimsical performances, only those in the College knew of the woman's ability to coax secrets out of others. Not even Vaer knew what she ever did with those secrets, but to them it didn't matter for the joy and light that Tala brought into others' lives was something far more important and valuable. In the end, it was this duplicity that painted a target on Tala's head, and Vaer came home from the palace one night to find their one and only true friend in the world assassinated in their shared quarters in the College and then promptly taken away through a teleportation spell.
Overwhelmed with grief, and knowing that the only person that would have ever even noticed the absence of one whose identities were made up of that of others was now gone, Vaer assumed Tala's identity. They eventually hunted down Tala's assassins, tracking them down to House Sovexan of the Atrean Diet of Magi, and eventually bringing about their destruction before leaving Atra and traveling to other lands in the world, hoping to bring the same joy and light that Tala brought to the hearts of the people. Vaer was declared as missing - presumed dead - by the College.
Years later, the sole heir and survivor of House Sovexan was embroiled in machinations involving crazed scholars and a powerful, extraplanar entity. Teaming up with a band of adventurers, Vaer returned to Atra at long last to put an end to Sovexan once and for all - and to find Tala’s resting place to restore her to life.
